EAST LANSING, Mich. - More than 35,000 students of all ages from throughout the country will get a taste of Michigan State University life and hospitality this summer during approximately 225 camps, conferences and seminars.

"MSU's residence halls closed on May 4, we had our first group here May 6 and we'll continue through Aug. 11, even when some of our fall semester early arrivals are here. We really never close," said Maria Giggy, University Housing conference coordinator. "This year, too, we are focusing on bringing in school groups to acquaint the students with the many opportunities available on a college campus."

The summer agenda includes Boys State and Girls State, sponsored by the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary, respectively. This is an opportunity for high school juniors to learn leadership skills and the workings of the executive, judicial and legislative branches of government on the state and national levels.

Among the summer camps and conferences are the 34th annual Clarion Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers' Workshop, the High School Honors Science Program, the Insect World Science Camp, the Michigan Victim Assistance Academy, yearbook and journalism camps, and the Spartan Debate Institute, as well as a host of other educational enrichment, arts and sports camps.

Since 1876, MSU has hosted a variety of events to inform, educate and help young people develop their academic and athletic skills. MSU'S University Housing conference staff assists groups and individuals with their planning for a variety of events - including weddings, corporate meetings, parent and student orientation programs, and programs for national and international visitors.

For a complete listing of summer camp and conference activities, check the MSU 2001 University Housing Conference Service Web site at http://www.hfs.msu.edu; select "Conference and Event Planning," then "UH Conference Services."
